Haunted Visit # 2: Salem Jail Complex

Location: Salem, Massachusetts

about two summers ago my family and i attended a family reunion (dad's side) in Boston, MA.

immediately i was excited; not only because it was my first family reunion (i've always dreamed of going to one since i was young) but because Massachusetts is filled with paranormal activity.

i loved the old feeling i got when visiting Massachusetts and loved the fact that there were so many graveyards and things to do related to the paranormal.

one of the spots we visited, while stopping in Salem, was an old Salem jail complex that supposedly (according to our tour guide) was inspiration for the jail square on the Monopoly board game.

"Background:
The original portion of the granite jail and the Federal period Jailer’s House were constructed in 1811-1813. The granite jail was substantially enlarged in 1884-1885 including the addition of the octagonal cupolas. According to Bryant Tolles, Architecture in Salem, the Salem Jail was one of the oldest correctional facilities in the country still fulfilling its original function until it was vacated in 1991. Individually and as a complex, the buildings located at this key downtown site have considerable architectural significance."

upon my visit i snapped a couple pictures and in one i got a strange form of a body behind the gated complex:

you can see a head, an arm, a body, and two legs...plus you can see through it.
could it be a former inmate?

"The jail has a rich history of hauntings. You are suppose to be able to see lights in there still, even though the electric has been off since it's closing. It's said you can hear talking and screams comming from within also. It is claimed that you can sometimes see prisoners standing in the yard also. It is adjacent to The Howard Street Cemetery. One of the most Haunted cemeteries in Salem Ma. Supposedly haunted by Giles Corey along with many others. There is still a trap door in the dinning room where there were many hanging that took place when the jail was first open." - ghostvillage.com
