awhile back i decided to get a room at the Horton Grand Hotel after reading a book entitled "Haunted San Diego".

i called the hotel to ask for prices and make a reservation.
Upon inquiring rates, i asked the front desk if Room 309 was vacant which led the man to say, "Ohhhh, you want "that" room."
the room is supposedly haunted by a gambler by the name of
Roger Whitaker whose debt bought him a ticket to the afterlife.
after making the reservation, i gathered up my friends and my brother to accompany me on my ghostly sleep-over.

So the story goes that Roger Whitaker was way in over his head in gambling debt (at the time that part of San Diego was known as the "stingaree" district which consisted of brothels, saloons, and all sorts of sinful delights)...and he was being chased by men he owed money to...slipping into the hotel room to hide in the armoire where they eventually found and murdered him.

the infamous armoire

"Roger Whitaker has made numerous appearances. One guest saw him in the hallway, and he looked so real, she asked him where the ice machine was located. Imagine her surprise when he disappeared before her eyes.
Room 309 - Guests have been awakened in Room 309 in the middle of the night by the bed being shaken and the armoire's doors being opened. Lights have been known to have a will of their own, turning on and off. Objects have been known to move by themselves. The temperature in the room becomes unexplainably warm, unaffected by the air conditioning or opening a window. Sounds of someone playing cards can be heard when the room is locked and vacant. An indentation of a form can be seen on the bed, sometimes just after the maids make the bed." -hauntedhouses.com

the room was quite small and had that old Victorian style still.
when first opening the door we felt an eerie chill to the room.
we began taking pictures and even set up a video camera while leaving the room in hopes of catching some activity...
but we were disappointed.

i also read that the room contained a journal for guest to write their experiences in (which had some pretty creepy ones for this room)
but to our disappointment the journal had been removed.
we tried provoking the ghost and even brought out some cards to get a game started with him...
but nothing happened.
it was a fun experience and definitely a really awesome setting for some spookiness, but maybe we'll catch something on our next stay.
